Marriage and Family Therapy in Toronto

One of the major driving factors to pursue my Master of Marriage and Family Therapy was inspired by my personal mantra of wanting to “make a difference.” Throughout my studies and work experience, I have had the privilege to interact with clients, ask questions, share ideas, and renew my commitment to learning. As an energetic, creative and dynamic individual, I have taken the initiative to further my skills in leadership, mental health, and therapy by completing various leadership conferences and development courses. I have also benefited from a number of placements in health care administration and family and child services. My involvement has resulted in an indisputable commitment to working with children, adolescents, and adults and a sincere interest in the promotion of mental health initiatives. My driven nature to live a committed, passionate, and dynamic life, with continued learning, curiosity, and self-improvement forms the core of my mantra and shapes my own story.

My education, my story, and my volunteer and work experience have all added to my ideas concerning theories of practice. We all have a story to tell. When stories are clouded by judgment, or seen to be rebellion against the “natural” way of society, they begin to dominate as a negative role in an individual’s and family’s life. The child, adolescent, or adult and/or whole family then begins to be defined and confined by negativity. Knowing the unique relationships one holds with a problem and understanding a person apart from the problem helps to identify strengths and resources that would otherwise not be explored. Thus, if the negative stories are broken from judgment and dominating social narratives, the possibility for understanding, meaning making, and ultimately change, emerges.

Intuition, energy, compassion, and commitment, along with developed play therapy and counseling skills are the building blocks to my practice with children, adolescents, adults, parents and couples. Whether it is issues concerning behavioural disorders (ADHD, ODD, and the like), emotional disorders (ASD, depression, anxiety, and the like), or relationship issues, my role as a full family practitioner, a role I take great pride in, is to facilitate and promote change. I hope to be that person that allows you and/or your child the confidence to push for a better tomorrow and transform your story into a story that better suits your growth, learning, experiential processes, and relationship abilities.

Together, we can recreate your story of health and happiness.

My clinical practice at TPS is supervised by Jancy King M.Ed., C. Psych. Assoc., a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. As such, all or most of your fees may be covered by your workplace benefits.

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a natural curiosity about the differences inherent in people’s personalities, interaction styles, and behaviour patterns. My insight into the nature of individuals’ problems, along with my genuine concern for others’ well-being, is what served as the major indication that the field of psychology is a strong fit for me. I am a warm, compassionate, and sensitive person. I bring true enthusiasm and motivation toward helping clients meet life’s challenges to create meaningful and satisfying change in their life. I strive to provide a counselling and assessment environment where clients can feel comfortable and at ease.

My Practice:

My practice focuses exclusively on the psychological development and well-being of young individuals: toddlers, children, adolescents and young adults. I have had specialized training and experience providing play therapy and/or counselling to toddlers and children (2-11 years of age). As well, I have experience providing individual counselling to latency aged children, adolescents and young adults (12-21 years of age) in both a university and high school setting. I provided counselling to young clients who presented with a large variety of mental health concerns including: anxiety, depression, body image difficulties, suicidal ideation, and relational problems.

Throughout my graduate education at McGill University I developed my assessment and clinical skills, and further developed my insight into others’ behaviour. I recently completed the intensive one year-long Clinical Extern Training Program in Narrative Therapy through the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre at the University of Toronto. As a result of this well-respected and long-established training program, I have significantly expanded my knowledge and stretched my skills in providing respectful, collaborative, and strength-based therapy with children and families. As well, such training has helped to energize and inspire therapeutic conversations in a different way, which often times has resulted in briefer duration of therapy.

My professional competence is not limited to treatment. I also have experience providing psychoeducational assessments for children, adolescents, and young adults for attention, learning difficulties, language problems, behavioural concerns, and giftedness. As such, I have a joint interest in providing individual counselling as well as providing psychoeducational and clinical assessments to children and young adults.

Counselling:

All too often, people lose sight of their strengths. With a consistent focus on “what is wrong with what I have and who I am”, people become distanced from their positive self-regard. Therefore, in counselling I believe it is highly important to bring in positive elements to foster hope and empower clients as they embark upon their journey toward self-acceptance. As social beings, we have a basic need for belonging and relating to others, and as such, are very affected by the relationships we have with others, particularly our partners and primary caregivers. In counselling, I strive to help clients recognize their strengths and meet their unmet relational needs to re-establish emotional connection with significant others in their life.

Assessments:

Whether you are a younger student in elementary school, or an older student entering college, university, or trying to access a graduate program, a psychoeducational assessment can help to meet your scholastic goals. I provide practical and useful recommendations in my assessment reports for parents, students, and school personnel. Accordingly, I am able to provide my clients with a number of strategies to help them to overcome their difficulties in attention, learning, and/or behaviour to enjoy greater academic and vocational success.

My clinical practice at TPS is supervised by Jancy King M.Ed., C. Psych. Assoc., a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario.  As such, all or most of your fees may be covered by your workplace benefits. If you are interested in working with me, please call our clinic, Toronto Psychological Services at 416-531-0727 or email us at tps.info@bellnet.ca to schedule an appointment with me.

My name is Jancy King. I am the Director of Toronto Psychological Services, a private psychology clinic in west Toronto and a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) in good standing.

Over the years many people have asked me why I entered the field of psychology. Until recently, I gave the same answers as most people in my profession; I like to help people, human behaviour fascinates me and I want to contribute to my community in a meaningful way. Of course, all that is true; but, more recently I began to explore more personal reasons for my career choice, particularly the diversity in my work.

I’ve come to understand that a love of meaningful communication is the basis for my entry into the field of psychology. As long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be understood, to be truly ‘known’, to communicate with others so they understand my experiences. At the same time, I have a strong desire to understand others, their thoughts, feelings and behaviours, in order to enrich my own life, my path and hopefully, their path. At an early age, I recognized that same need in other people ~ the
human desire to communicate meaningfully on many different levels.

Whether I am completing a psychological assessment, providing counselling or play therapy, communication is at the heart of my work ~ the common denominator. I never see myself as the ‘changer’ but rather someone who facilitates change. I am always aware that I don’t know how to live life any better than anyone else but instead utilize a highly specialized set of professional skills to help people meet their goals. Integrity, honesty, confidentiality and fundamental principles provide the essential foundation for ethical work and values that I hold to be primary in my life and my work. At the CPO I am registered in Counselling Psychology, School Psychology and Clinical Psychology.

Clinical/Counselling Psychology:

I enjoy counselling adults, couples, adolescents and children concerning a wide range of problems in living. I have indepth training in developmental psychology and treat children/adolescents using either play therapy and/or counselling. I treat issues such as anxiety, anger management, depression, social difficulties, behaviour, anger, separation/divorce and many other issues. Reunification or reconciliation counselling is a specialized area and supports adults as they reestablish a relationship with children/teens after estrangement.

Assessment:

I complete a wide range of psychological assessments. I provide skilled educational assessments for clients of all ages. Students or those wanting to become students might seek assessment for Learning Disabilities (elementary, high school, university/college) as well as developmental delay, attention, ADHD and giftedness. Clinical assessment is limited to persons aged 2-21 years of age and could assess behaviour, ASD (Autism/Aspergers), MVA and clinical issues such as anxiety, depression or social competence.

If you would like to work with me, please call our offices and make an appointment. My services, like that of all TPS staff, may be covered all, or in part, by your workplace benefits. Please watch my page for new articles/postings.

Having grown up in a multicultural country, I have always been fascinated with how our cultural experiences, country of origin, values/beliefs, and languages not only sculpt the way we behave and communicate, but also the way we perceive ourselves, others, and the world. I learned from a young age to respect and appreciate diversity. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved listening to other people’s stories and how their experiences shaped them into the person they are. This curiosity in wanting to learn more about human behaviour and the way we think eventually led me to study psychology.

As I look back on my life and what brought me to where I am today, I recognize how privileged I am to have met many individuals who helped solidify my decision to pursue a career in the mental health field. Still, there is one individual, a mentor, who stood out among the rest. Through empathy and authenticity, she encouraged personal growth and opened my eyes to new ways of thinking. And she was the reason I decided to stop wishing/thinking and to start acting. That is, to start making changes in my own life. However, change was not easy. At times, it felt like I was stepping onto an unknown territory while being blindfolded. Not only can it be frightening, it can sometimes be a long and challenging process. I recognize how difficult it can be to try and change the way we think or act, but change is not unattainable with the support and guidance of a mental health professional. In addition, there are tools and skills you can learn that will help you through the process. Like how she inspired me to change and grow as a person, I hope to be able to do the same for you.

Through my education, volunteer, placement, and work experience, I had the chance to interact with individuals from different backgrounds and with diverse presenting issues. I provide counselling to adolescents and adults experiencing stress or mental health issues, including, but not limited to anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Although I adopt the cognitive-behavioural model, I have also received training in emotion-focused therapy. I believe that change is possible with increased awareness in the way we think, feel and act. I strongly believe that increased understanding of our emotions are beneficial in promoting our mental well-being and can be helpful in treating many mental health concerns.

Apart from counselling, I also provide psychoeducational assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. I enjoy interacting with individuals and helping them uncover their strengths and weaknesses so that they are able to utilize this knowledge to achieve their best performance in a school setting.

My clinical practice at TPS is supervised by Jancy King, M.Ed., C. Psych. Assoc., a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. As such, all or most of your fees may be covered by your workplace benefits. If you are interested in working with me, please call our clinic at (416) 531-0727 or email us at tps.info@bellnet.ca to schedule an appointment.

Life has a funny way of reminding us that we may not always be able to control what we experience or how we feel. These moments of ambiguity can often feel overwhelming, exhausting, and paralyzing to many people—myself included. What we can certainly control, however, is what we choose to do in these moments. It is my own experiences with uncertainty and adversity that motivated me to pursue a career in counselling.

If you are reading this, it’s probably because you are thinking about making a change for yourself by seeking professional help. Even if you remain undecided on whether you are ready to take this step, I would like to commend you for your courage as you entertain this idea. Seeking help, especially for the first time, can be scary. Naturally, talking to a total stranger about yourself may create a fear of being judged or misunderstood.

As a therapist, my aim is to alleviate these fears and create a safe space so that you may feel supported and understood as you embark on your journey toward self-improvement. I am someone who is warm, gentle, and compassionate. I believe in treating everybody with respect and dignity, which is why throughout my education and professional experience, I have developed skills in addressing diversity (e.g., socio-economic status, culture, gender, sexual orientation, marginalization, etc) and its intersectionality with mental health challenges in a counselling setting. I am also continuously engaging in continuing education, not solely to ensure that my skills are up to date, but also because I genuinely love to learn.

I have years of experience working with a diverse group of individuals experiencing a variety of psychological concerns. I am passionate about my practice, and I seek to work in a collaborative manner with my clients. Once we meet, we will work at your own pace to identify your strengths and create goals; we will also explore the feelings, thoughts, and behaviours that may be causing you emotional pain; and we will discuss new ways of managing your distress, thereby improving your overall well-being.

I provide play therapy and counselling to support children, adolescents, and adults through their emotional pain and behavioural concerns. I also support couples by identifying cognitive or behavioural patterns that may be wounding their relationships. I work with couples using a strength-focused approach to improve communication skills and conflict resolution skills to increase the couple’s emotional and physical intimacy. Whether it’s with children, teens, or adults, I work hard to help my clients feel empowered and hopeful about their futures.

Counselling Psychology:

I provide counselling to children, adolescents, adults, and couples experiencing in distress. I have experience treating concerns related to ADHD, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, trauma, substance abuse, anger, and relationships.

I am trained in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Gottman’s Couples Counselling, and Emotion-Focused Therapy. I understand that we all experience life differently, which is why my approach to counselling is customized to fit your needs.

My clinical practice at TPS is supervised by Jancy King M.Ed., C. Psych. Assoc., a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. As such, all or most of your fees may be covered by your workplace benefits. If you are interested in booking an appointment with me, please call our clinic at (416) 531-0727 or email us at tps.info@bellnet.ca.
